Schools and the bling bling

The public school are at it again. David Bisbee, a Rogers attorney called Governor Huckabee and the legislature "deadbeat dads" in a court filing because they didn't allocate enough money to the public schools in this state during the most recent session.

I guess increasing school funding by $380 million this fiscal year, and $268 million next year just wasn't quite enough. On top of that, they legislature gave $35 million to help subsidize teachers' health insurance and committed $40 million for school upgrades in 2006.

This just reminds me of what happened in Kansas City back in the 80's. They increased school funding by almost a billion dollars over 10 years and did not see any significant increase in test scores. I wish these people would realize that you don't solve a problem just by throwing money at it. If anything, you just make things worse.

Now if we could just get the University of Arkansas system to moderate their tuition increases as well....but that's another gripe entirely.....

Kudos...

Kudos to Governor Huckabee on his upcoming book about fitness and his weight loss. I think he has been an inspiration to the people of Arkansas when it comes to fitness. I am impressed how he was able to transform is himself from flabby, out of shape person to a guy in his late 40's to a person who ran the Little Rock marathon in a little over 2 years.

I think its great that in his book, he simply says the best way to be fit and healthy is to eat less and exercise more. Of course, almost most every knows that but its not easy so that's why very few books have been written about it.

It is silly the conspiracy theorists who claim that the 'guv lost the weight because he secretly had a gastric bypass (GB) instead of going to the weight loss center at UAMS..

In my opinion, there is nothing wrong with GB, I think its an excellent procedure for people who have had trouble losing weight in the past and are very obese. If the 'guv had 200 pounds to lose instead of 100 pounds, he probably would have been a good candidate for a GB.

My Sister in Law had a GB done back in January. She has been trying to lose weight unsuccessfully for probably 20 years and needed to get the weight off before she started having some serious health problems. To date, she has lost over 90 pounds and looks and feels much better. Additionally, she is changed her lifestyle and no longer desires the unhealthy foods that she had previously loved so much. I am so proud of her for taking this step get control of her life.

Oh and as a side note, does anybody not see the irony of a Krispy Kreme being next door to the Arkansas Heart Hospital??? LOL!

Darn...I keep forgetting to post to this

Ok...the legislative session is over but the stupidity of Arkansas continues as always.

Now the schools are wanting to re-open the Lake View case saying that the legislature didn't give them enough money this past session in spite of the funding increases they received in 2004 and in the '05 session. I think the guv was right saying that no matter how much money you give a school district, they will always say they don't have enough money. I am getting really sick and tired of public education. I think its time for school vouchers and let the school have to compete even more for the tax dollars by increasing performance and becoming better stewards of the public funds that are entrusted to them to educate our children.
